DBHS Scholar Athletes Recognized

Student athlete. Notice they the word student comes first. For many athletes at DBHS, they represent both the student and athlete, being nominated for Broward County Scholar Athletes Awards.

The seven students who were nominated all play different sports, and not only did they excel on the field, but also in the classroom. The Buck athletes include Miguel Devonish, Tammy Noel, Alexa Riggs, Dorothea Trotter, Roque Azpurua, Quadeem Colvin, and Richard Paez. The sports they participated in ranged from football, cheerleading, cross-country, swimming, and volleyball. Three of the seven were awarded $1,000 in scholarships during the ceremony.

The facts that students were able to balance both school and sports, keeping up their grades, and perform on the field are already outstanding goals.

“It can be difficult balancing school and sports, but if you care enough about it you can make it work,” senior Richard Paez said, who is on the swimming and diving teams.

Staying motivated and focused can be another factor that the student athletes may face during their high school career.

“I use my mother as motivation, because every time I see her, I see how hard she works just to make my life better. One day I want to make her life better,” senior Quadeem Colvin said. Colvin was the team captain for both boys’ volleyball and basketball teams.

They also have to take on the challenge in their sport to push themselves on the field, pool, or court.

All the scholar athletes must have maintained a minimum of a 3.2 GPA along with many other standards. Quadeem Colvin was received the Broward Health Scholar Award, Roque Aspurua received the Webster’s Sports Scholar Award and Dorothea Trotter received the BCAA Scholar Award
